Do you value a diversified economy? Should we pursue technological advancements? Is sustainable development a factor?

Community Input Sessions

We would like to thank everyone who came out to our Community Input Sessions on April 25, 26 & 27 in Clairmont, Teepee Creek and Wembley. Included in the outcomes of the three evenings, participating County residents worked out some ideas around value-added business for existing industry that would create jobs and boost local economies. We heard similar sentiments across the County which will inform our research as we create a Growth and Economic Development Strategy.

Facilities

We are looking for your ideas to make our community’s facilities even better. Tell us what you think.

Ideas

Proper location for all facilities , do not put a drag strip in a rural residential area. Proper planning including noise abatements must be enforced by planning & development. Every county resident has the right to the peaceful quiet enjoyment of his or her rural property.

Agriculture - Adding Value

Do we need more ways of adding value to Agricultural products in the County? Tell us what you think.

Ideas

Yes, we do. I think the first step is to have a freeze and cold storage area for food in Grande prairie. That way local restaurants could access food a lot easier. We could use this as a point of shipping as well for large shipments of food that need to be transported. Partnering with Sysco or GFS might be a good avenue. To make value added products is tough and expensive so I think the best approach would to have an incubator space for companies to ramp up in. Maybe the Leduc food centre and community futures can put their heads together.

Peace Country Classic Agri-Show

Agriculture is one of the major parts of the County's economy. What opportunities do you see for further developing it in the next decade and beyond?

Ideas

We need to push our public facilities to use good food. Local. Isn't it funny that the worst food we get is in the hospital, and it is the place that you need too nutrition to help your body heal. There are studies where it reduced the average stay by 1 day due to healthy and good food being available.

Thank-you, AshleyH, for your comments. Supporting local producers is something we can all agree with. If you would like more information on supporting locally, the Economic Development group at the County has been working on an initiative with other organizations called Think Local Market. The hope is that local producers sign onto this exciting project and consumers can easily find local products. Check out http://thinklocalmarket.com/ for more information.

Growing the North

Many people have chosen to live in the County of Grande Prairie for a number of reasons.  What are your reasons?  What about your lifestyle is non-negotiable for you to remain a resident in the County?

Ideas

I love the lower taxes and small town vibe of Clairmont. I would love to see a swimming pool and more shopping in Clairmont.

The Maclean's Magazine article is correct , we need to improve the reputation of the County. Pride in ownership for rural yards, residential tax incentives for residences that show pride in ownership.

Give us your thoughts!

What key assets in the County do you feel should be preserved?

Grande Prairie's picture

Let's start the discussion!

Tell us what you envision your community to look like in 5, 10, 20 or 50 years?

Ideas

I feel the County has to drastically improve its image, or we will lose valuable ppl & assets. The growth of a community depends a great deal on how it is managed.
